YouTube

YouTube is an American video-sharing website headquartered in San Bruno, California. The service was created by three former PayPal employees—Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim—in February 2005. Google bought the site in November 2006 for US$1.65 billion; YouTube now operates as one of Google's subsidiaries.

Some cool facts about YouTube as well as how it got started. Would you believe it all started in the minds of 3 ex-PayPal employees who were coming up with ideas for a new business in a garage in Silicon Valley who wanted to make it easy to share personal videos with friends?! It wasn't doing well in its first months starting out so it then became a dating site offering young women to pay $20 to upload a video bio. Also the first ever video uploaded to YouTube was 19 seconds of one of the site's co-founders at the San Diego Zoo.

A Decade Later, YouTube Remains a Mystery, Especially to Itself

Hank Green writes an awesome summation of the history of YouTube...worth taking a look! "YouTube has become so ubiquitously mainstream that the phrase “mainstream media” is obsolete. So, on this arbitrary occasion, I feel a bit of an obligation to write down some of the history of the technology, the platform, the content, and the culture. Basically just a “how did we get here” from someone who, for a lot of it at least, was there."
