World War II

World War II (often abbreviated to WWII or WW2), also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, although related conflicts began earlier. The vast majority of the world's countries—including all of the great powers—eventually formed two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most global war in history; it directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. In a state of total war, the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, blurring the distinction between civilian and military resources. World War II was the deadliest conflict in human history, marked by 50 to 85 million fatalities, most of which were civilians in the Soviet Union and China. It included massacres, the genocide of the Holocaust, strategic bombing, premeditated death from starvation and disease and the only use of nuclear weapons in war.

World War II: Young German Soldiers

During WWII, many soldiers from both sides were a little more than kids. Thrown into uniform and given little training, they were forced to endure combat and conditions that eventually broke them.

The Unsung Heros of World War II

When we think about the Second World War, we often think about the valiant Americans that stormed the beaches of Normandy or the stouthearted Soviets that held off waves of German forces at Stalingrad. It is truly unfortunate that most people think that a 'world war' means US, Russia, England Germany and Japan. Few people know that in Hitler sent an encoded telegram to Mexico, asking them to join their cause and declare war on the US. The US was a powerful nation during WWI, but we were already fighting a two front war. If Mexico had allied with Germany they could have easily invaded from the south, but instead the Mexican Air Force fought alongside the US in the Pacific Theater. Here are four members of Mexico's 201st Air Force Squadron.

This is my grandpa. During World War II he was stationed in the 98th general hospital in Neubrücke Germany. I stumbled across this photo of him from his service and thought it needed to be shared as a reminder of all the different ways to serve your country.
