The University of Mississippi (colloquially known as Ole Miss) is an American public research university on 3,684 acres located in Oxford, Mississippi. It is the state's flagship university and largest in the state, and is ranked among the fastest-growing universities in the nation as documented by the Almanac of Higher Education. The university was chartered by the Mississippi Legislature on February 24, 1844, and four years later, the doors opened to its first enrollment of 80 students. The total enrollment for the 2016-2017 academic year was 24,250, including enrollment for the University of Mississippi Medical Center. In 2016, the University of Mississippi was classified as an "R1: Doctoral University—Highest Research Activity", which represents a crucial sorting exercise that occurs once every five years under the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The university ranked 145 in the 2018 edition of the US News Rankings of Best National Universities.
