Interview about Dark Shadows

Contributed by Samantha Donaldson

Everyone knows that this director, writer, film producer, and artist has a dark, quirky theme to his movies. But that is what makes this man as an auteur. He has a specific style that works for him and that particular style sticks to for him. The film that made him stick to the style that we know Tim Burton today is his student film Vincent, featuring Vincent Price as the narrator. All of the techniques he uses in that film is seen multiple times in his other works. His use of chiaroscuro lighting, which is extreme low-key lighting to create distinct areas of light and darkness in film. A prime example of chiaroscuro lighting is in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Also, Edward Scissorhands would not have existed if it wasn't for Tim Burton's imagination as a teenager because the film was based on a drawing that Burton did as a child. There is another movie that was left out on this list and that was Mars Attacks! The cast of Mars Attacks! is composed of the biggest stars known today such as Natalie Portman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Christina Applegate, Tom Jones, Jack Nickolson, Glenn Close, and Cleveland Browns legend Jim Brown.
