Starfish

Starfish or sea stars are star-shaped echinoderms belonging to the class Asteroidea. Common usage frequently finds these names being also applied to ophiuroids, which are correctly referred to as brittle stars or "basket stars". About 1,500 species of starfish occur on the seabed in all the world's oceans, from the tropics to frigid polar waters. They are found from the intertidal zone down to abyssal depths, below the surface.

Starfish have no brains and have eyes - one on the end of each of their arms - that they used to prevent themselves from wandering too far from home.

The crown of thorns starfish... ouch! It's found in the Great Barrier Reef off of Australia. They actually regurgitate their digestive enzymes to dissolve (and then eat) the coral they sit on.

Internal anatomy of a starfish

It's kind of complicated...yet kind of a simple set of systems that make up this creature. When you find a starfish on the beach (or heck, in one of those tourist-trap gift shops) you don't really wonder about how it eats or eliminates waste. A graphic like this reminds us that it is in fact an animal.
