It began with the Eastern State Penitentiary, a place for the most troublesome, or dangerous of prisoners. The act of submitting an individual to complete, and utter isolation, with no more that 4 ft. of space, or any outside air, continues to be a form of punishment in the U.S. Justice System. Recent studies have proven that the long-term affects of solitary confinement have lead to psychological diseases, mental breakdowns, and a complete loss of social understanding. This tactic damages the mental and physical health to many American men. Foreign countries have outlawd solitary confinement, so why does our government continue to spend on such a program? Solitary Confinement is the most modern form of cruel and unusual punishment.
