Social media is something most people cannot live without these days. People go to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to read about some of the biggest news in the world, to see what friends are doing and to keep a close eye on their favorite celebrities. We all know that social media can make a superstar overnight just from a simple upload to YouTube, but we fail to realize that social media can destroy a celebrity overnight as well. The negative effects of social media on celebrities arise because it gives them very little privacy, it can influence their fan base and it can even control their relevance in the entertainment world. Celebrities are people just like you. They have their good times, but sometimes they can go through some pretty terrible situations, just like you. They experience death of loved ones, sickness, drugs, and a whole bunch of other things that just may not be any our business. To make matters worse, we broadcast their pain and embarrassment all over the internet. Where is the privacy? There is a lot of pressure going through tough situations when you know that everyone is watching you. This pressure can break celebrities down and sometimes even make them go crazy. We read about rumors and scandals all of the time on Twitter and Facebook. A few of us, or all of us, may have even contributed to spreading these rumors through our tweets and posts. You may not be the type of person to let a silly rumor effect how you feel about a celebrity, but other fans are exactly those types of people. When a fan reads something bad about a celebrity on the internet, for example they beat their wife or they do drugs, they immediately stop liking them, buying their music, or watching their TV show. The rumor may not even be true. This means that social media can really take a toll on a celebrity’s fan base, in the end taking a toll on their money. Social media is like a marketing platform for celebrities. You can reach out to your fans through Twitter, inform them on upcoming events on Facebook and upload pictures of your new baby for your fans to see on Instagram. Social media is a way for fans to keep in touch with their favorite celebrities. If you are a celebrity and you are not on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or other websites like these, then you may be considered to be irrelevant. Before social media, fans did not care what a celebrity was doing at the club last night or where they buy their nice clothes. All they cared about was the entertainment of watching their show, the fun of seeing them play, or the rush they received jumping and screaming at their concert. Now that social media is here, this has all changed, and maybe not for the good of the celebrity. Social media may just be the worst thing that happened to celebrities.
