Shooting of Walter Scott

The shooting of Walter Scott occurred on , 2015, in North Charleston, South Carolina, following a daytime traffic stop for a non-functioning brake light. Scott, an unarmed black man, was fatally shot by Michael Slager, a white North Charleston police officer. Slager was charged with murder after a video surfaced which showed him shooting Scott from behind while Scott was fleeing, and which contradicted his police report. The race difference led many to believe that the shooting was racially motivated, generating a widespread controversy.

As I am sure many of you have heard, the recent and fatal representation of police brutality occurred in my home state not far from my high school. Walter Scott, an unarmed black man, was videoed running away from an officer after being stopped for a broken taillight and being shot repeatedly in the back by the officer. The officer claimed the camera didn't catch the threat the officer experienced but the footage was enough to convict the officer with a charge of murder and potentially make police wear body cameras in the Charleston County. Scott's funeral was this afternoon and there have been many protests in Charleston lately. I haven't been able to attend one yet since they are usually while I am working but hoping to soon.
