Self-sufficiency

Self-sufficiency (also called self-containment) is the state of not requiring any aid, support, or interaction for survival; it is a type of personal or collective autonomy. On a national scale, a totally self-sufficient economy that does not trade with the outside world is called an autarky.

Island Made of Water Bottles

This architect Richart Sowa lives in a three story home off the coast of Mexico on an island which he made from over 150,000 recycled water bottles! He now lives with a Japanese supermodel which he met over Facebook and a pet dog and does still rely on parts of the mainland via a 100 ft cord that connects to the shore for solar electricity, water and the Internet. He makes a living through music, art and by showing visitors the quirks of the island in exchange for voluntary donations. Read more in the link
