Sea glass

Sea glass and beach glass are similar but come from two different types of water. "Sea glass" is physically and chemically weathered glass found on beaches along bodies of salt water. These weathering processes produce natural frosted glass. "Genuine sea glass" can be collected as a hobby and is used for decoration, most commonly in jewelry. "Beach glass" comes from fresh water and in most cases has a different pH balance and a less frosted appearance than sea glass. Sea glass takes 30 to 40 years, and sometimes as much as 100 years, to acquire its characteristic texture and shape. Sometimes also colloquially referred to as "Drift glass" from the longshore drift process that forms the smooth edges. In practice, the two terms are used interchangeably.

DIY Sea Glass Jewelry

Sea glass is fun to collect, I find myself doing it every time I go to the beach. But when you get home it sits in a jar and that is all the purpose it serves. Yes, it's beautiful in the jar but why not wear it? Its fun and easy to make jewelry out of sea glass. All you need is wire, wire cutters and beads which are optional. Start by cutting a piece of wire a few inches longer than you think you'll need. Start wrapping the wire around the sea glass however you please. You can add the beads on to the wire as you wrap the sea glass so the beads end up in the desired spot. Make sure the sea glass is securely wrapped in the wire. Now you are ready to attach your piece to earrings, a necklace chain or whatever else you desire. The attached picture is a necklace pendant I made.
