On May 25th 1977 a little known space adventure called Star Wars was released to 300 theatres nation-wide. Star Wars was written and directed by George Lucas. It tells the story of The Skywalker family-Luke, Leia and Anakin. Based upon stories like "Flash Gordon", and the Seventh Samurai, Star Wars captivated audiences with its Science Fiction action adventure and the story of the struggle between good and evil. It went on to spawn two sequels(1980's "The Empire Strikes Back" and 1983's"Return of the Jedi") and three prequels which Lucas brought to the big screen with 1999's "The Phantom Menace", followed by 2002's "Attack of the Clones" and 2005's Revenge of the Sith". The Star Wars saga is a cultural and cinematic phenomenon that has spanned the globe for the last 35 years. Spawning merchandise that has netted Mr. Lucas billions and billions of dollars. It has also been credited for the inspiration of many of today's biggest names in the movie industry. Along with that it helped create several different companies that Mr. Lucas helped get off the ground including: Pixar, ILM, Skywalker sound, and Lucas Arts. Star Wars has also been given the dubious distinction of being the movie that is responsible for the way movies are made and released today. It has been blamed for being the "godfather" of the blockbuster. The style of building up a movie with merchandise and "teaser" trailers is now widely used today in movie making. In short, Star Wars with its rich characters and brilliant story-telling is a one of a kind movie that only comes along once in a lifetime.
