Rocky is a 1976 American sports drama film directed by John G. Avildsen and both written by and starring Sylvester Stallone. It tells the rags to riches American Dream story of Rocky Balboa, an uneducated but kind-hearted working class Italian-American boxer working as a debt collector for a loan shark in the slums of Philadelphia. Rocky starts out as a small-time club fighter, and later gets a shot at the world heavyweight championship. The film also stars Talia Shire as Adrian, Burt Young as Adrian's brother Paulie, Burgess Meredith as Rocky's trainer Mickey Goldmill, and Carl Weathers as the champion, Apollo Creed.

Rocky: Rocky vs. Apollo Creed

In the Rocky movie, Apollo Creed, the antagonist, is clearly a figure representing the real life Muhammad Ali

The story is actually based on a real event, on the fighter Chuck Wepner. He was known as the Bayonne Bleeder. He went 15 rounds against Muhammad Ali, and thus that is where Stallone got the storyline for his movie, Rocky.

The movie studio originally wanted James Caan to play Rocky, but Sylvester Stallone refused. He wrote the script, and he would refuse to sell it to the movie studios unless he played the title role. Reportedly, Sly Stallone sat down and wrote the outline for the movie in a weekend
