rationality is not just about thinking

Rationality is not just having a clear mind... it is having a clear heart! For if the heart is locked against an idea, so will the mind. Yet the reverse is also true--if your mind is locked, so will your heart be. You must learn to stop resisting and start listening and consider that the frightening idea you refuse to mention is the truth or your duty. A grudging willingness to admit error does not suffice; you have to cultivate a taste for it. — Aaron Haspel
