A pumpkin is a cultivar of a squash plant, most commonly of Cucurbita pepo, that is round, with smooth, slightly ribbed skin, and deep yellow to orange coloration. The thick shell contains the seeds and pulp. Some exceptionally large cultivars of squash with similar appearance have also been derived from Cucurbita maxima.

Creative ways to "carve" your pumpkin

I like thinking outside the box. I decided one year that instead of carving my pumpkin in the traditional way, I would paint it. It was really fun! Messy, but fun. I decided to make it unique to my personality by using a bit of glitter. There are several other ways to be creative when "carving" your pumpkin, such as melting crayon wax on it, scratching off the outer orange layer, or like I demonstrated, painting it. I love this photo I took of my final product, because it is just so cute.
