I’m home and in a neck brace. I am no worse but no better. I begin my seemly endless cycle of doctors appointments. One week turns into two, then a month turns into three. I am sitting on the sidelines unable to play any sports. Soccer, which had been my life since I was three, was suddenly a spectator sport. I am slowly regaining feeling in my lower extremities and I am able to walk without assistance. I am finally told that my neck brace can be removed. Despite the doctor’s clearance, I remain skeptical and am terrified to move my neck. My mother encourages me to turn my head just a little. I panic and feel fear that I’ve never felt before. Physically, I am okay but mentally I am not.
