Peter the Great took control of Russia in 1689. Three accomplishments of his include: 1) He became an autocratic absolute monarch so Russia could be persuaded to adopt the policy of westernization 2) He improved education by simplifying the Russian alphabet and set up academies for mathematics, science and engineering. 3) He rebuilt the Russian army along western guidelines in an attempt to defeat Sweden. His new army had defeated the Swedish force and won land along the Baltic Sea.
