Born Frederick August Kittel, Jr in Pittsburgh in 1945, as the fourth of seven children, August Wilson grew up in the impoverished Bedford Avenue area of the city. August Wilson has been referred to (by Henry Louis Gates, Jr.) as “the most celebrated American playwright. His work features a series of ten plays, The Pittsburgh Cycle, including Pulitzer Prize winners Fences and The Piano Lesson.
