Believe it or not, on July 9th 1962 the US detonated a nuclear weapon called Starfish Prime over 240 miles in the sky with an explosive yield of 1.45 megatons! That's about 100 times stronger than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima! Once detonated, the warheads not only generate heat and light but also incredible amounts of X- and gamma-rays. Effects of the blast were felt thousands of kilometers away and are still resonant to this day. An aurora bloomed in the sky and an extremely large electromagnetic field was created above the Earth.
