Japan is one of the most secular nations in the world. Though there are about 500,000 Protestant Christians in Japan, the population far exceeds that number. The first missionary to Japan was James Hepburn. Hepburn did his work mainly around Kanagawa, which is near present day Tokyo. In this city he opened a medical clinic, and helped developed Romaji, the romanization of Kanji symbol alphabet. He used this development to begin translating the Bible into Japanese.
