In the skin, melanocytes help protect the cell from UV radiation. That is why people with lighter skin tone, or less melanin, have a higher propensity for getting skin cancer. In Melanism, there is many more melanocytes than usual, giving the opposite effect of albanism- the person or animal is much darker to the point of being black.
