Rehearsals: Rehearsals begin on Monday and Tuesday nights with the Broadway groups who rehearse from 8-10 PM. On Wednesday night, they do a full length tech rehearsal in real time. On Thursday, parade day, the high school bands begin rehearsing at 3 AM and go until 7, with about half an hour per group. The parade starts at 9!

400,000 cubic feet of helium is used annually to fill up all of these balloons!

The 2013 parade will be the 87th annual parade. It has only been canceled three times since it started in 1924, all due to World War II. This picture is of Harold the firefighter, a balloon which has been in the parade since 1948.

Participating in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade: I was a part of a marching band that participated in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade a couple years ago, and I decide to share some behind-the-scenes information. First, the only way to participate is to be a part of a group that gets selected, such as a band, and dance troop, a famous person, etc., or to be an employee (or family member of an employee) of Macy’s. Interested groups must go through an extensive application process, involving information, letters of recommendation, videos, etc. Groups are selected and notified close to two years ahead of time.
