Here is a collection of basic Japanese phrases. I am trying it out along with Youtube videos and memrise.com to prepare for a trip to Japan.

"Kore" means "that" in Japanese.

"Arigatou gozaimasu" means thank you in the present. "Arigatou gozaimashita" means thank you for something you did in the past. "Gozaimasu" is pronounced without the u sound.

"Ohayou gozaimasu" (pronounced oh-hi-oh go-zai-mas in English) means good morning in Japanese. the u at the end of mas-u is silent.

"Hai" means yes in Japanese. It is said quickly, with force.

"Konbonwa" means "good evening" in English.

"Konnichiwa" is the Romaji (romanized) version of "hello" in English. It can be used at any time of day to say hello.
