It was said in the late 1700's farmers feared the first hot air balloons were dragons descending on their land from the sky. In attempt to put them at ease and celebrate the flight, the pilot shared their champagne with the farmers after landing. This is where the tradition of bringing champagne on a balloon comes from.

In 2011, 9-year-old Bobby Bradley became the youngest to fly a balloon solo. I don't know if I would trust someone that young to fly anything larger than a toy model.
