The Hmong/Mong (RPA: Hmoob/Moob, Hmong pronunciation: [m̥ɔ̃ŋ]) is an ethnic group from the mountainous regions of southern China, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand. The Hmong are also one of the sub-groups of the Miao ethnicity (苗族) in China. The Hmong began a gradual southward migration in China in the 18th century due to political unrest and to find more arable land (Scott, 2010).
