Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is the transplantation of multipotent hematopoietic stem cells, usually derived from bone marrow, peripheral blood, or umbilical cord blood. It may be autologous (the patient's own stem cells are used), allogeneic (the stem cells come from a donor) or syngeneic (from an identical twin).

Be the Match

There are tons of people afflicted with deadly conditions that can be cured with stem cell transplant. Be the Match program is a donor-match network to find compatible donors for those suffering from many of the diseases listed above. I matched with a young girl just after my senior year in college. She was dying from AML. Less than a month from being notified of our match I donated stem cells. I had no idea who she was or where she was from. Today she is alive and well. She recently attended her junior prom and is able to compete in sports again. The bear was a gift from her, the T-shirt reads “My stem cells saved a precious life”.
