Gender

Gender is the range of characteristics pertaining to, and differentiating between, masculinity and femininity. Depending on the context, these characteristics may include biological sex (i.e., the state of being male, female, or an intersex variation), sex-based social structures (i.e., gender roles), or gender identity. People who do not identify as men or women or with masculine or feminine gender pronouns are often grouped under the umbrella terms non-binary or genderqueer. Some cultures have specific gender roles that are distinct from "man" and "woman," such as the hijras of South Asia. These are often referred to as third genders.

Poem about Gender, by Chotpot.tumblr.com

This comic has been around the internet for about a year now, but it continues to grow more and more popular. Unfortunately, I always see it without its source. The person who wrote a message this powerful deserves to be known. So, chotpot.tumblr.com deserves all the credit for this masterpiece. For those who are confused about gender, this little piece of art will most certainly clear the issue up for you!

Everytime you walk into a store, you see toys and clothing marked specificially for girls and others marked specifically for boys. Toys-R-Us and other businesses have decided to stop labeling these toys.

Important to know: Gender is a culturally constructed identity that an individual orientates towards and often demonstrates through attire, mannerisms, roles, etc. Sexual orientation is sexual preference and is not dependent on gender. There is a spectrum of sexuality that does not fit into the confining binary that our society has created. Food for thought: Observe people as you walk around somewhere. Observe your reaction to these people. What are you seeing, in regards to gender, and what are you assuming in regards to sexual orientation? Challenge yourself to not assume that a certain gender indicates a certain sexual preference. Observing without judgment is difficult but provides you with the potential to open your mind and open your compassion for all humans.
