Elizabeth I of England

Elizabeth I (7 September 1533 – 24 March 1603) was Queen of England and Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death on 24 March 1603. Sometimes called The Virgin Queen, Gloriana or Good Queen Bess, Elizabeth was the last monarch of the House of Tudor.

Elizabeth I inherited the throne of England from her father, Henry VIII, in 1558. 1) She had restored religious peace to her country by returning her kingdom to Protestantism. She established a national church and then a state church which could be accepted by both moderate Catholics and moderate Protestants. 2) Under her reign, England began building an American Empire as a new source of income. Colonies strengthened England economically but this income did not carry over to Queen Elizabeth I.
