Chinchilla

Chinchillas are two species of crepuscular rodents, slightly larger and more robust than ground squirrels. They are native to the Andes mountains in South America and live in colonies called "herds" at high elevations up to . Historically, chinchillas lived in an area that included parts of Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, and Chile, but today colonies in the wild are known only in Chile. Along with their relatives, viscachas, they make up the family Chinchillidae.

This is my chinchilla Kobuta when she was about a month or two old. As you can tell, she really loves sleeping in spare mittens (though shes a bit too chubby now hahaha).

Chinchilla fur is so soft and luxurious that they are often hunted for their coats rather than their meat. While human hair has about 2-3 hairs in each follicle, chinchillas have 50-80! Can you stand the thought of anyone hurting this little guy?? I'd rather pet a chinchilla than wear them.

Instead of taking a bath in water like most mammals, chinchillas clean themselves using dust. This dust is made from volcanic ash and absorbs oils from the dense chinchilla hair. Usually they need a dust bath at least 3 times a week or more if they are handled often. Chinchillas are born with the knowledge of how to take one and never need to be taught how.
