Boston Marathon

The Boston Marathon is an annual marathon hosted by several cities in greater Boston in eastern Massachusetts, United States. It is always held on Patriots' Day, the third Monday of April. Begun in 1897, the event was inspired by the success of the first marathon competition in the 1896 Summer Olympics. The Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon and ranks as one of the world's best-known road racing events. It is one of six World Marathon Majors. Its course runs from Hopkinton in southern Middlesex County to Copley Square in Boston.

It was the first time I thought about the Boston Marathon--the day I posted the few entries below. Little did I know, I would sit at work a few days later, watching helicopters hover over Copley Square, and listening to unending sirens for hours after. With the suspects in custody, and a beautiful memorial that continues to grow each day with more shoes, stuffed animals, and signed posters, Boston grows strong. I am proud to have lived here this year to say that I saw how people react when other people show how cruel they can be. The people of Boston all reached out their arms to protect those around them during these times, and the sincere sympathy, empathy, and understanding shared here has been remarkable. Thank you, Boston.

In 2012, extreme heat forced many runners to sit out of the race they had been preparing years to run. It's disheartening that something out of your control can obviate the time you spent preparing physically and mentally for an event. Hopefully these runners decided to compete in the next race, which would not see near as high temperatures.
