But I just don't like the idea that Barney and Robin divorced three years later, only for Robin to be with Ted after his wife passed away. The character development has gone to waste, and the "Ted loves Robin" subject feels very trite and unreasonable to a lot of viewers who were already accustomed to "Barney Loves Robin" after the initial couple breaks up. Team Barney foists to us that it will stand solid throughout most of the last few seasons, only in the series final for it to crumble before everyone's eyes. The ending's very bittersweet so it's preferable to have it open-ended.
