Agriculture is the cultivation and breeding of animals and plants to provide food, fiber, medicinal plants and other products to sustain and enhance life. Agriculture was the key development in the rise of sedentary human civilization, whereby farming of domesticated species created food surpluses that enabled people to live in cities. The study of agriculture is known as agricultural science. The history of agriculture dates back thousands of years; people gathered wild grains at least 105,000 years ago, and began to plant them around 11,500 years ago, before they became domesticated. Pigs, sheep, and cattle were domesticated over 10,000 years ago. Crops originate from at least 11 regions of the world. Industrial agriculture based on large-scale monoculture has in the past century become the dominant agricultural method.

Produce from First Underground Urban Farm About to Hit Shelves

An underground farm in London, the only one in existence, is about to start trading. The 1 million pound ($1.58 million) subterranean site mostly publicly funded took 18 months of research and development. The farm is located 108 ft underground and is aptly called Growing Underground. With climate change and the availability of high-quality agricultural land representing ongoing issues, it's encouraging to see that people are finding innovative solutions to these problems.

The North Oconee FFA Chapter has been helping change the world by building and shipping out meals to those in need. Last year we raised $6,250, organized over 150 volunteers, and packaged over 25,000 meals! This year we want to do it again, but bigger! 30,000 meals and a hunger simulation dinner and auction fundraiser!

If your chicken you buy at the supermarket doesn't say," Organic," don't be led to believe that the bird was never fed hormones. I am a former chicken grower for a large company. The companies feed the birds hormones in the food to increase size but then stop feeding them the hormones a certain amount of time before sending the birds for slaughter. This gives the bird time to evacuate all hormones so consumers are not ingesting them.
