Ferguson unrest

The Ferguson unrest involved protests and riots that began the day after the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by white police officer Darren Wilson on August 9, 2014, in Ferguson, Missouri. The unrest sparked a vigorous debate in the United States about the relationship between law enforcement officers and African Americans, the militarization of police, and the use-of-force law in Missouri and nationwide. Continued activism expanded the issues to include modern-day debtors prisons, for-profit policing, and school segregation.

CNN recently removed a photo like this from its Twitter feed of Missouri Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson after accusations that he was was a gang member proved false. He is actually in a fraternity called Kappa Alpha Psi. Hand signs in Greek organizations are nothing new so I am very disappointed that the media jumped to conclusions like this. I can only shake my head at the ignorance. Read the full article below.

Ferguson Police More Equipped Than US Soldier Invading Iraq

I want to give you the exact words of a US veteran who invaded Iraq. Here is what he had to say on Twitter with the accompanying picture. "The gentleman on the left has more personal body armor and weaponry than I did while invading Iraq." Please do not hesitate to comment with any questions, comments, or concerns. I am truly dumbfounded by this statement and accompanying picture. Keeping in mind the dates of the invasion of Iraq and the protests in Ferguson, how is it still possible that our troops who were involved in a military invasion were less equipped than police at a protest in Missouri? More importantly, WHY are the police more equipped than soldiers at what have been largely peaceful protests?

A War Zone or an American City? You decide.

Here is a picture of police officers in Ferguson, Missouri where Michael Brown, and unarmed black teenager was shot and killed by officer Darren Wilson. Take a close look at the picture and at each denoted piece of equipment they are using. Many academics, veterans, analysts, and the like have pointed out that these men belong in a war zone rather than at a protest in Missouri. Is all of this equipment really necessary? Is any of it necessary? Does intimidating protestors calm them down or escalate the situation? Does using violence on civilians promote peace? These are questions to think about when looking at this picture and watching / reading the news.
