There is no "Deputy Stage Manager" role in American Theatre, according to the Actor's Equity Handbook. The "Production Stage Manager" or PSM will typically "call the show" or give each of the cues to keep a show moving along. They cue technical crew members and sometimes cast, while following the orders of the director. The PSM calls actors to hold while technical problems are sorted out during Technical rehearsals or "Tech"(usually 2 weeks before a show opens), and determines where in the script to restart halted scenes. They will run the rehearsal space as far as starting, breaks and ending, however their main focus is to watch the show and make sure they understand every aspect of the performance as possible. They should be relatively replaceable in the rehearsal space so that they may be able to leave for meetings with designers and technicians if needed. Once in Tech it is the Production Stage Manager's responsibility to make sure everyone is on the same page as far as what is happening in the space at all times. When moved from the rehearsal studio to the performance space the PSM will hand all responsibilities of the Stage or "Deck" to the Stage Manager or 1st Assistant, depending on the show. PSM is a separate position in some theaters, while in others there is only a Stage Manager and an Assistant, in which case the responsibilities of the PSM would then be assumed by the Stage Manager.
